Types of graphic design

Katelyn Planke

Graphic design is a vast and exciting world with many different options including but not limited to;

● Logo design

● Packing design

● Layout design

● Video

● Photo manipulation

● Illustration

● Film graphics

1. Logo design is a complicated but simple concept. Logo designers work with

companies to develop a look for their brand. However, the logo isn't a part of the

brand its the identifier so it has to be simple and recognizable. One of the first things

you see when looking at the product is the logo and you decide if you want to buy

this item or support this company.

2. Packing design is everywhere you look. The grocery store is full of packages in every

aisle with different brands to choose like The water bottle on your desk or the food

product you had for dinner. The package designer's job is to make you want to buy

and consume the item. With colour elements and graphics. Package designers have

a job to make sure all the information needed is on the package or else the product

colour be recalled and taken off the shelves.

3. Layout design is a vast part of the design from magazines to pamphlets and posters

and even business cards and banners. As the name implies they work on how the

content is spread out from where the type goes and the placement of the images and

elements even where the logo should go.

4. Video design is related to the graphic design world. Video designers are working with

basic animation. Like those videos or ads, you see on tv with graphic elements.

These projects are long-term projects that can take a very long time and need a lot of

other graphic design types like basic layout design, illustration and understanding of

colour.

5. Photo manipulation is taking an image and editing it to how the client desires whiter

that be adding a person in the photo or removing them. Changing the colours or

making pictures into a piece of art. Photo manipulation is in social media and

everywhere we look. From making someone skinner or removing a blemish on a

person's face. Or removing the background of an image to add it to another project.

Most if not all of this work is done on adobe photoshop.

6. Illustration in the graphic design world is similar to making cartoons but also creating

vector images (the definition “Vector artwork is art that's made up of vector graphics. These

graphics are points, lines, curves and shapes that are based on mathematical formulas.

When you scale a vector image file, it isn't low resolution and there's no loss of quality, so it

can be sized to however large or small you need it to be.” (“Vector art: What is vector art?”)

These are normally items like icons on phones and illustrative logos and so much

more.

7. Film graphics are items like posters you see in your favourite movies or the fake

products see in movies. Due to copyright laws, most products cant be shown on

screen so film graphic designers create these just for the movies. They also make

the posters you see at the movie theatre or online

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what the graphic design world has

to offer.
